Facial Exfoliation Park City

Now that Winter has arrived in Park City, it’s time to focus on better skincare habits to keep skin hydrated and youthful. One of the most important things you can do during the Winter months is exfoliate.

What is Exfoliation?

Exfoliation means the removal of dead skin cells. The skin is the body’s largest organ. Humans naturally shed their skin in a process of monthly intervals of skin renewal. This process allows the skin cells to make their way from the dermis to the epidermis (top layer of the skin) and eventually degenerate. This cycle slows down as we age. By age 27 it’s time to think about ways to help turn over dead skin cells.

Three Most Common Ways to Exfoliate:

  • Mechanical — Mechanical devices such as electric facial brushes, sonic devices, or tools like a microdermabrasion instrument are minimally invasive tools used on thicker, uneven skin and great for smoothing out scars and stretchmarks.

  • Chemical — Chemical exfoliation involves the use of enzymes, beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid to dissolve dead skin cell buildup from the surface of your skin—no scrubbing necessary.

  • Physical — This is a process where grains, microbeads, or scrub-like textures are used to physically buff away dead skin cells found on the skin’s surface. Physical exfoliants leave your skin feeling instantly smooth.

How Often To Exfoliate?

The important thing to remember is not to overdo it. More is not better when it comes to exfoliation. 2-3 times a week at home is plenty. A professional monthly facial that includes a mechanical or chemical exfoliation is recommended as well.

Dead skin cells make the skin appear dull, dry, and rough, while healthy skin cells appear tighter and smoother with an overall brilliance. However, daily applications can eventually take a toll on the face. The aging process decelerates the renewal process of the skin, which results in visible signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, a dull complexion, and looser skin.

An important rule is to hydrate with a Hyaluronic Acid Serum and then lock in the hydrating serum with an emulsifier like Shea Butter immediately after exfoliating. And of course, if you are going to be outdoors, Always wear an SPF 30 or higher.
